Musky pluggers
should remember that Spring means using smaller lures and
much slower retrieves. Those big plugs and large suckers
that you used last fall usually don't produce, even on those
big pigs, until the water warms. Small bucktails or rizzo-tail
spinners worked low and slow over emerging weeds can be
dynamite in the Spring. One opening day, I caught and
released three nice musky on a small Mepps bucktail using
this technique. The key was to allow the lure to sink and
then retrieve it just fast enough to keep the blade
spinning. I also especially like small, glider-type
jerkbaits that pause and hover on the outside turns for
early season musky. Little Arbor Vitae Lake would be a good
bet for some early season musky action.
