Fall Musky
Hi folks
this is Guide Dave Pucci.
Well this
summers fishing is nearing and end and the Fall fishing is
coming up fast. That means Musky's to me. While
fall is also a great time fore Bass and Walleyes and most
other species of fish, Musky's seem to be most people's
first of choice. As the water temps start to go down,
Musky action can get fast and furious. All the Musky's
go on feeding binges, but finally the big fish can be
caught.
This is the
time of year to beef up your tackle and get out the big
Jerkbaits and start dragging medium to large suckers.
I like suckers anywhere from 14 to 16 inches unless I'm just
after a trophy then I might go up to 16 to 20 inch
suckers. For me large double hook quick set rigs work
the best. I usually weight them down with at least an
ounce of lead and fish them vertically over the side of
the boat, 2 to 4 feet off the bottom. Now on occasion
I'll run a little smaller sucker behind the boat with a
float, but most of the time I like one sucker on each side
of the boat. You'll have to experiment to see which
way works best for you.
I recommend large suckers on quick set rigs. It's best
to run several suckers at different depths. I like to
run one directly over the side of the boat, and keep it
close to the bottom. I'll also run one out the back of
the boat on a float. Usually the one out the
back of the boat, I'll run much shallower. Remember
when sucker fishing to move your boat slowly. If you
troll around with your suckers too fast, they'll not last
very long.
