Brad Petzke's Fishing Reports and Conditions

Captain John Tomczyk of Daybreak Charters, Based in Marquette Michigan, we specialize in fishing charters on the deep blue waters of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Our experienced Captain, top-notch boat, and the finest fishing tackle available allow us to offer you the angling experience of a lifetime.  Our fishing adventures include offshore fishing trips to the famous Stannard Rock for giant Lake Superior Lake Trout.

FISHING REPORTS:

We fished Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend near Marquette. Unfortunatly, we were unable to get to Stannard Rock on Saturday due to the 20mph+ East winds offshore. But nearshore it was a pretty nice weekend, even with the East wind and the Full Moon, neither of which is good for the fishing. Water temps in Marquettes Lower Harbor as of yesterday were about 46-48 degrees on the surface and 44-45 at the ball. East of Marquette towards the Shot Point area the temps were pretty similar, and maybe about 1 degree cooler as compared to the harbor. We have still been focusing on the 20-50 feet of water depths as this is where most of the warmest water and best action has been. Mostly mixed bags of Lake Trout, Coho Salmon, and a couple Kings here and there. Down-speeds of 2.4-2.6mph have been the best, with Magnum Spoons on Leadcore being the best set-up. Slide Divers with Mini-Spin Doctors and Peanut flys have also had a few coho when set to run about 15 feet down. Moonshine Atomic Melon continues to be a hot spoon on the riggers, usually run about 15-25 feet down and 60-100 feet behind the ball. The fishing out deep for Lakers has been pretty good for the few that have been chasing them out there. 150-180 feet of water has been the best depth out there, with a few 15+lb. fish coming in this weekend from the deep water. Fairly calm wind for this week is forcasted so we should be on the water just about every day. We plan on making a few runs to the deep water to look for a few big Lakers slightly offshore, and we'll also continue working the shorelines looking for the Silver fish! Updates to follow! Good luck out there and be safe! -Capt. John

April 15th, 2012 The 2012 season has finally begun! RELENTLESS went in the water last week and is ready for another season! We made a few trips out this week, mostly to shake down the boat and go through all of the gear. Water temps in the Marquette Harbors ranged from 38-41 degrees, and air temps haven't been much warmer than that. Though we have not been fishing to hard yet, we have found a few real nice fish scattered about in the ice cold water. We have found a few nice Kings around already, and one went 14lbs.! Slide Divers and Leadcore have been the best producers lately, with Gold or Orange spoons being the ticket. Slide Divers set at 60-90' behind the diver, and 25-50' out have been good, as well as 2-4 colors of Leadcore with small orange spoons or jointed Rapalas in Natural/Orange colors. Down-speeds of 2.4-2.7 have been best. Its should only be a matter of time before the Sticklebacks and Smelt are in heavy down to the East of Marquette. A few of our fish have already been coughing up bait fish when brought aboard. With Gale Force wind warnings, as well as the Hail/Sleet/Snow that is forcasted for today, it'll be a few days before we can get back out there. Being the boat is in about 3 weeks ahead of normal, we have plenty of time! Good luck to you this season and be safe out there! More reports will follow as the weather allows us to get back out there. --Capt. John
